BANANA EAT!?

Its interesting to watch someone try and communicate with someone who does not speak the same language. What is the typical method used to try and communicate across language barriers?

1. speak slowly
2. speak loudly

The first method seems to make sense... the second, honestly, not so much. Yelling the word "banana" does not help someone better understand the meaning as opposed to simply saying the word instead. A lot of people seem to have this notion that speaking loudly is a good idea. So I chuckle to myself as I watch someone practically yell "DO YOU WANT TO EAT A BANANA!?... BANANA EAT!?" ..... to someone who just stares back with a O__O expression.
